Russian Emergencies Ministry Sends Over 20 Tonnes of Humanitarian Cargo to YemenRussia has sent humanitarian aid to Yemen that includes nutrition products, multi-seat tents for civilians affected by the ongoing military conflict in the country.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Russian Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies and Disaster Relief sent over 20 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Yemen on Monday, the ministry’s spokesperson said.

“At 1:56 p.m. Moscow time [10:56 GMT] an Emergencies Ministry’s Il-76 plane left the Moscow region’s airport of Zhukovsky for Sanaa. It carries more than 20 tonnes of nutrition products, multi-seat tents for civilians affected by the military conflict,” the spokesperson said.

The return flights to Moscow will bring back citizens of Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), who decided to leave the war-torn country.

A similar operation was carried out in 2015, when the Russian plane delivered about 23 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Yemen.

Yemen has been engulfed in a violent conflict between the government headed by President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and the Houthi Shia movement, also known as Ansar Allah, and backed by army units loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Since March 2015, the Saudi-led coalition of mostly Persian Gulf countries has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi’s request. Millions of people remain in need of immediate aid, according to the United Nations.
